The Ekegusii Project
Kisii County - Kenya, East Africa
Eight of the original nine Ekegusii translators are pictured here. The nine are Charles Okari, John Gisemba, Matthew Mogire, Starnley Mogaka, James Abere, Samuel Nyakundi, Richard Gesanda, George Nyamete, and John Magare. Ekegussi is spoken by the Omogussi people (also called Kissi or Abagusii) of Western Kenya, primarily in Kisii and Nyamira counties and parts of Kericho and Bomet County. It is spoken as a first language by about 2.2 million and a second language by 500 thousand more. There are two dialects: Rogoro and Maate. The standard dialect is Rogoro. The Ekegusii translation team was just approved by Global Bible Translators at the translation conference in Nakuru, Kenya in April 2025. The team has divided itself into three smaller teams. They have started translating John and Romans with each team assigned a chapter. Pray for them.
